How did we get the name "Scruffy"?
I'm surprised I never blogged about this before. How did we come up with this whole "scruffy" thing? Well, it's actually kind of an interesting story. It all started out as something that we took initially as a minor insult.
Several years ago we had a guy who was coming to the church. We'll call him Melvin. At some point, Melvin invited a friend of his, Harold, from a more affluent part of town to come visit and he did. Some time after the visit Harold remarked to Melvin that he was surpised Melvin went to The Urban Church because "they're kind of scruffy". It was funny when Melvin related this story to me because at first we felt kind of insulted. But it didn't take very long for us to come to the realization that we ARE kind of scruffy! At first it was mainly because we dress down (jeans, tees, etc.), and because we have a wide variety of people from differing income classes.
After a few laughs, we started to adopt that phrase to describe ourselves. A while later someone came up with the idea that we should use the term "scruffy" to explain to people that we are a church of imperfect people. We all make mistakes. We all sin. None of us is perfect. We're all "scruffy". So we quickly latched on to "scruffy" and started to refer to ourselves as the scruffy church. When we use that phrase today, we use it to make the point that we here at "the scruffy church" accept you as you are because nobody's perfect.
A while later I read a great book by John Burke called "No Perfect People Allowed". That book describes us to a "T". We accept you as you are and if you're perfect, you won't like us... because we're scruffy...deal with it.
So recently we decided since everyone refers to Urban as The Scruffy Church anyway, we may as well just change our name. So as soon as we can get our sign outside redone, we're gonna officially become The Scruffy Church. Why not?

Love It!
I remember listening to Pastor George Bogel one night, years ago on the radio. He said something that has always stuck in my mind. He was referring to the imperfect people that were used mightly by God.
"God sure has called a "Rag Tag Bunch" to be His people."
That's what we are, but He loves us.
I love it great blog Tom
